Cape Fear River Basin Study

Welcome

This site provides information about the Cape Fear River Basin Study. If you have visited here before, you may want to take a look at What's New first.

Purpose of the Study

The State of North Carolina does not have a tool to evaluate the basinwide impacts of either existing or proposed future water uses in the Cape Fear River Basin.  The Division of Water Resources (DWR) and local stakeholders have commissioned a study to develop a hydrologic simulation model for the basin.  The stakeholders include the counties and municipalities within the basin.  The model will include the entire watershed from the headwaters down to Lock and Dam #1 near Wilmington.  Below this point the Cape Fear is influenced by the tide from the Atlantic Ocean. The estuary below L&D #1 is outside the scope of the study.

Planned Uses for the Model

Assist with the Jordan Lake water supply allocation process,
Evaluate existing and proposed Interbasin Transfer Certifications (IBT),
Enhance Future Water Resource Decision-Making by State and Local Officials,
Drought Management
