Abstract: The USGS Stream Gage Program Data Set lists current and historic stream gage sites in North Carolina. It includes information that describes the gage location and period of record. No actual stage or flow information is included. Both continuously operated stations and partial record sites are described.
Indicators list the data use for each gage, such as Regional Hydrology, Legal, Planning, or Project Use. Funding details for each gage are presented.Presently, only recently discontinued gages are included. More discontinued gages will be added as time permits.
Purpose: The USGS Stream Gage Program Data Set was developed for the managers of the USGS Stream Gage Program. The Gage Program is a cooperative effort between the US Geological Survey and several other agencies. The North Carolina Department of Environment, Health, and Natural Resources, Division of Water Resources, is one of the cooperating agencies that funds half the cost of installation and operation of stream gages in North Carolina. With detailed information of both historic and current gages, the Division of Water Resources can make better decisions with respect to maintaining old gages, adding new sites, or addingadditional equipment to an existing gage. This data set was created to combine all existing information about the various gage sites into one database.
Supplemental_Information: Most of the USGS Stream Gage Program Data Set came from the USGS publication, Water Resources Data, North Carolina, Water Year reports. This annual publication provided key details for the database. Additional information came from three other sources: meeting notes from both federal and state cooperators, conversations with people familiar with the stream gage program history and the utility of various gage sites, and lastly, other publications from the USGS.
All of the source information was entered by hand. Some calculated fields exist that present the period of record count and the decimal degree version of the Latitude and Longitude rather than just listing the original deg.min, sec notation.

Native_Data_Set_Environment: The USGS Stream Gage Program Data Set was written and is maintained in Lotus 1-2-3, version 4, format. This is the standard nativedata format for this dataset. The Division of Water Resources maintains this data on PC's running on a Novel network. As copies of the data set are updated, the improved version is added to the Metadata subirectory on the file server. In the future this data set will be copied and converted to ATLAS*GIS dbf format which is a dBase file structure.

Data_Quality_Information
Attribute_Accuracy_Report: No attribute accuracy assessment has be conducted on the USGS Stream Gage Program Data Set. Attributes include Hydrologic Unit Code, County, Period of Record, Record Count, Drainage Area, Latitude, and Longitude all of which could be in error. If. the Lat/Longs are correct then they would be no more accurate than +/-40 feet. No data accuracy tests have been conducted to validate the USGS Stream Gage Program Data Set. Errors probably exist from typing data into database.
Logical_Consistency_Report: No tests have been conducted on the accuracy of the dataset. No tests for valid values, general tests for graphic data, nor specific topological tests were performed.
Completeness_Report: The USGS Stream Gage Program Data Set was originally created to show current stream gages only. The NC Division of Water Resources is in the process of adding discontinued gages as time permits. Missing data occurs at some point in most fields.
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Horizontal positional data is expressed in both 'degree, minute, second' and decimal degree notation for latitude and longitude. Values were probably read off of paper topographical maps. The values should be considered no better than +/- 12meters (40 Feet).

Entity_and_Attribute_Detail_Citation:
"STA NO"- Station Number, Site data are presented according to station number. Beginning in 1950, the order of listing data collection stations in Geological Survey reports is in the downstream direction, along the main stem. A unique 8-digit number is assigned to each station such that they increased in downstream order. Therefore, station numbers for sites on a tributary, upstream from a main-stem site, are smaller than the station numbers for the main-stem site. Similarily, station numbers for sites on a tributary that enters between two main-stem sites, falls between station numbers for the two mainstem sites. Intervening station numbers are frequently reserved for sites to be established at a later time.
Unfortunately, the system of 8-digit station numbers is not adequate to accomodate all of the new sites, therefore, all 8-digit station numbers were expanded to 10 digits. For older sites, two zeros were added to the end of the station number; newer sites were assigned 10-digit station numbers. Some station numbers were revised and supersede those found in other publications.
