The town of Highlands protects its drinking water reservoir, Lake Sequoyah, with strict land-use regulations intended to limit sedimentation in the watershed. Some elements of the Highlands project include low-density development within the watershed, vegetated stream buffers, construction Best Management Practices, impoundment regulations, and public education. Highlands has observed a substantial improvement to water quality since the regulations went into place in 1993.
