| The City of Washington took extra initiative to protect their drinking water aquifer by implementing a Wellhead Protection Plan and educating the citizens of Washington about proper well maintenance. During a thorough study of the Castle Hayne Aquifer, it was discovered that the greatest threat to water quality came from improperly maintained wells. In response to this information, the Wellhead Protection Planning Team initiated a comprehensive public education campaign specifically directed at owners of private wells.
