NC DEQ-DWR Broad River Basin Model

Broad River Basin Model

Model Development Project Launch

The North Carolina Division of Water Resources has launched the hydrologic model development project for Broad River basin. The project kickoff meetings will be held in Spindale, NC on October 7th, 2010.

Need for a Hydrologic Model

The Broad River basin covers 5,419 square miles of total drainage area, 1,513 square miles entirely within North Carolina.  The basin supplies water to the population of nearly 342,282 people residing in 8 North Carolina counties within the basin.  Water use in the basin is almost evenly split between ground water and surface water sources.  The model will only cover the Broad River to the confluence of Buffaloe Creek and the Broad River (below which all tributaries originate in South Carolina).

A computer model is a needed tool for evaluating surface water resources management in the basin.  For long term planning, the State can use the model in making regulatory decisions by evaluating potential impacts of proposed projects with significant water withdrawals within the basin as well as interbasin transfer permit applications.  Local units of government as well as the State can use the model to plan for increased water use due to growth, and to evaluate the effects of operational and regulatory constraints during a drought condition.

OASIS Model

OASIS, a patented, mass balance, water resources simulation/optimization model will be developed for the Broad river basin. This basinwide model will use the finest practical geographic resolution and timestep.

Modeling Training

Thank you for your interest in the Broad River Basin Model. The deadline has passed for signing up for the training classes. If you are stilled interest in training or need modeling assistance please contact us at dwr-broad-staff@lists.ncmail.net.
