Groundwater Levels & Quality
Click on a radio button below to change the map to the network of interest. Radio buttons in the DWR Active Network filter the map by aquifer. Clicking on a map county creates a table of wells. Links produce tables of well information as specified. | ||
Browse the entire statewide DWR Active Network, or wells in counties starting with: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, L, M, N, O, P, R, S, T, U, W, Y , or wells by aquifer: All, Surficial, Upper Tertiary, Yorktown, Castle Hayne, Beaufort, Peedee, Black Creek, Upper Cape Fear, Lower Cape Fear, Lower Cretaceous, Bedrock || Download text file: active, inactive (tab delimited) || Telemetry Equipped Wells || Interactive Map Interface includes access to potentiometric surface maps; using the MAKE POTMAP tool, this interface also allows the end user to create potentiometric surface maps for the regional aquifer and time period of interest) |
wells are distributed as shown on map. |

DWR personnel recognize that we can not possibly monitor enough wells state-wide to answer all the water quantity or quality related questions, so we encourage county governments and others to develop local monitoring well networks. If they choose, those network coordinators can store their monitoring data in our data base system. If that is of interest please contact the Division for more information. If you have initiated that process already, you may enter the data processing area following this link. |
These databases are "works-in-progress" and are made available to the general public after best efforts to screen out errors -- but we may have missed a few. We encourage everyone who uses this data to help us check for mistakes or omissions (email us if you find problems). Also, please contact us if you would like to donate information to be incorporated in our databases. The "quad" designation definition and a conversion program between latitude & longitude, state plane and quad is available. All latitudes and longitudes are in decimal degree format and GPSed wells use NAD 83 (horizontal) and NAVD88 (vertical). Downloading water level or quality data is described here in a helpful PDF document. Groundwater climatic response is best seen in the Drought Indicator Wells subset of the network. Access geophysical logs, aquifer characteristics, and hydrogeology databases. Individual maps for the DWR well sites are available as pdf files (using county and site links above). Combined county location maps and well site maps are also available in pdf files. North Carolina is a member of the National Ground-Water Monitoring Network whose portal gives the end user access to wells located throughout the United States to visualize multi-state aquifer conditions. |
